Laboratory accreditation is an important method of meeting professional standards of care and maintaining a safe, effective nuclear cardiology laboratory. The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology supports the mandatory accreditation of nuclear cardiology laboratories and offers tools and resources for labs seeking accreditation or applying for re-accreditation through the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL).
The ICANL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of quality nuclear cardiology, nuclear medicine, and positron emission tomography (PET) diagnostic evaluations. The ICANL provides a peer-review process of accreditation by which nuclear laboratories can evaluate and demonstrate their level of patient services provided. Such an evaluation process is important, given the high level of accountability to which healthcare organizations are now held by peers, the general public, and Medicare and other payers.
